AN explosion rocked Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port at around 0100 local time; an ensuing fire was quickly brought under control with no casualties or injuries.
Reuters reported the blast could be heard in areas between 15 and 22 kilometres away.
The media office of the Dubai government said in a Twitter post the fire was caused by “an explosion within a container on board a ship”.
The media office also tweeted: “Jebel Ali Port authorities: ‘We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the normal movement of ships in the port continues without any disruption.’”
Local media reported the vessel had been evacuated before the explosion occurred.
It is reported that the vessel involved is the Comoros-flagged Ocean Trader. The vessel is a 210-TEU, 90.81-mertre-long containership. It was built in 1993 and is currently at the port of Jebel Ali, according to vessel tracking websites.
