TWO RECENT incidents of improperly packed Cargo Transport Units (CTUs) which led to catastrophic failures have prompted a new international safety alert.
The cargo transport unit stowage alert issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) aims to raise awareness of the structural and stowage requirements for shipping containers and other CTUs in Australian ports.
This alert came in response to a rise in improperly stowed CTUs and structural issues identified during inspections.
In a media release announcing the safety alert, AMSA said the two recent incidents posed significant risks to ships, crew, port operations, and global supply chains.
“We urge all stakeholders involved in cargo handling—including packers, shippers, container owners, and shipowners—to review safety protocols and ensure compliance with international cargo handling standards to mitigate these risks,” the release said.
“These types of incidents show how important it is to follow structural and stowage guidelines.”
The alert said all involved in cargo handling should: review safety protocols and ensure compliance with international cargo handling standards to mitigate risks.
The safety alert shows the importance of proper cargo handling practices in preventing dangerous incidents at sea and in port facilities.
