SVITZER Australia has announced the completion of a major cyclone mooring project in Darwin Harbour, intended to reinforce maritime safety and resilience ahead of the cyclone season.

The $2 million investment is said to be the largest mooring initiative by Western Australian company Jeyco Australia, underscoring Svitzer’s long-term commitment to the local community and economy.

“This project was a massive undertaking, and our team, alongside our partners, worked tirelessly to complete it in time for cyclone season,” said Tom Abraham, port manager of Darwin, Svitzer Australia.

“We are dedicated to enhancing the safety and reliability of maritime operations in Darwin Harbour now and for the long term.”

The initiative includes the installation of nine cyclone moorings, designed to improve the reliability of towage services in the region.

Seven moorings were installed in October 2024, with the final two scheduled for completion in early 2025.

The company said more than 400 tonnes of materials were transported via truck and barge before being installed in Darwin Harbour.

The new moorings are expected to not only enhance Svitzer’s operational readiness but also release previously leased moorings, providing additional capacity for other maritime operators in Darwin Harbour.

Svitzer said the cyclone moorings will provide a more efficient standby location for Darwin oil and gas terminal operations, reducing response times when vessels require assistance.

“The equipment arrived in over 20 containers, which were unloaded, constructed, and organized by our local team before being loaded onto Bhagwan Marine vessels for installation,” Abraham said.

For Jeyco, a Western Australian company specializing in mooring and rigging solutions since 1992, this project represents a landmark accomplishment.

“This latest mooring campaign represents the largest project Jeyco has undertaken in the last decade,” Fitzpatrick said.

“It has been a journey of learnings, challenges, and fulfillment for our dedicated team.”
