DESPITE WHAT is being described internationally as a “correction” in container freight rates ANZ trades are still seeing notifications of general rises, peak season surcharges and other fee increases.

ANL Container Line will be implementing a rate restoration program from 15 September, at USD 500 per 20’ dry/reefer & USD 1000 per 40’ dry/reefer for all shipments from North & East Asia to Australia’s East Coast, Fremantle, Adelaide and New Zealand. This increase will apply on top of current Spot/FAK rates subject to all applicable surcharges valid on time of shipment, the line says.

On the same date ANL will apply a General Rate Increase (GRI) at USD 150 per 20’ dry/reefer & USD 300 per 40’ dry/reefer for all shipments from South East Asia, Indian Subcontinent, Middle East and Gulf to Australia East Coast, Fremantle, Adelaide.

Due to rising operational costs resulting from port congestion, container imbalance, and surging global demand, ANL says, it will be implementing a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for all shipments from Asia to PNG, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Gladstone & Townsville, commencing 1 October, as detailed below. The surcharge will be USD 300 per dry and reefer TEU and USD 600 per dry, reefer and hi-cube FEU.

On the same date ANL will impose a General Rate Increase (GRI) for all shipments from Asia to Pacific Island destinations of Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa, Wallis & Futuna & French Polynesia. This GRI will be USD 500 per dry and reefer TEU and USD 1000 per dry, reefer and hi-cube FEU.

Simultaneously ANL will implement a GRI for all shipments from PNG, Gladstone & Townsville to Asia of USD 300 per dry and reefer TEU and USD 600 per dry, reefer and hi-cube FEU.

And also on 1 October ANL will introduce a PSS for all shipments from PNG, Gladstone & Townsville to Indian Subcontinent, Middle East & Gulf, of USD 700 per dry and reefer TEU and USD 1400 per dry, reefer and hi-cube FEU.

MSC has announced rates from Australia & New Zealand to Europe will rise, broadly by USD300/TEU and 150/FEU, from 16 September. Details available here also provide a very useful list of all applicable surcharges and additionals.

The Swiss carrier has also announced a rate restoration of USD300/TEU, effective for all cargo from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia to Australia and New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Maersk on 1 September revised its PSS for shipments from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji Islands, Samoa & Tonga to India & Nepal. The PSS then became USD800 per dry TEU and 400 per dry 40, 45 and HDRY container. Maersk has also announced a phalanx of new and increased charges, effective 1 October (see separate story).
