DREWRY’S World Container Index has decreased by 2% to US$2,157 per 40-foot container for the week ending 24th April.

The Drewry WCI composite index decreased 2% to US$2157 per 40-foot container, 79% below the previous pandemic peak of US$10,377 in September 2021.
However, the index was 52% higher than the average US$1420 in 2019 (pre-pandemic).
The average YTD composite index closed at US$2854 per 40-foot container, US$38 lower than the 10-year average of US$2891 (inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 Covid period).
Freight rates from Shanghai to New York decreased 3% or US$95 to US$3611 per 40-foot container and those from Shanghai to Los Angeles and Rotterdam to Shanghai decreased 2% to US$2617 and US$481 per 40-foot container, respectively.
Similarly, rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam and Rotterdam to New York fell 1% to US$2312 and US$2109 per 40-foot container, respectively, whereas those from New York to Rotterdam increased 1% or US$8 to US$825 per 40-foot container.
Meanwhile, rates from Shanghai to Genoa and Los Angeles to Shanghai remained stable.
Drewry expects rates to continue to decline in the coming week due to uncertainty stemming from reciprocal tariffs.
