DREWRY’S World Container Index has seen another decrease this week, falling 2% to US$5428 per 40-foot container this week.

The latest Drewry WCI composite index of US$5428 per 40-foot container is 48% below the previous pandemic peak of US$10377 in September 2021, but it is 282% more than the average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rate of US$1420.

The average composite index for the year-to-date is US$4039 per 40-foot container, which is US$1242 higher than the 10-year average rate of US$2798 (which was inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 Covid period).

Freight rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles decreased 3% or US$198 to US$6303 per 40-foot container.

Similarly, rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam, Shanghai to Genoa and Shanghai to New York dropped 2% to US$7756, US$7182 and US$8764 per FEU, respectively.

Likewise, rates from New York to Rotterdam fell 1% or US$4 to US$762 per 40-foot box. Meanwhile, rates from Rotterdam to Shanghai, Los Angeles to Shanghai and Rotterdam to New York remain stable. Drewry believes that spot rates have peaked, but continued shipping disruptions will keep a floor under the spot rates for some time.
