DREWRY’S World Container Index decreased by 1% to US$2795 per 40-foot container this week.
The composite index has increased by 64% when compared with the same week last year and it is 97% more than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of US$1420.
The average composite index for the year-to-date is US$3333 per 40-foot container, which is US$626 higher than the 10-year average rate of US$2707 (which was inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 covid period).
Freight rates from Shanghai to New York decreased 4% or US$184 to US$4710 per FEU.
Similarly, rates from Rotterdam to Shanghai dropped 3% or US$27 to US$767 per 40-foot box.
Likewise, rates on Shanghai to Los Angeles declined 2% or US$70 to US$3634 per 40-foot container.
Also, rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam and Rotterdam to New York fell 1% to US$3050 and US$2224 per 40-foot box respectively, while rates on Los Angeles to Shanghai increased 1% or US$5 to US$693 per 40-foot container.
At the same time, rates from Shanghai to Genoa and New York to Rotterdam remained stable at the previous week’s level.
Drewry expects a minor decrease in trans-Pacific spot freight rates, whereas trans-Atlantic and Asia-Europe head towards stability in the coming weeks.
