CONTAINER throughput at the Port of Townsville for February was down on January’s numbers, according to the latest available trade statistics from the port. Through the month, a total of 3794 TEU passed through the port which was down 21.3% month to month. Throughput was also down 11% on February 2024.

Looking at container trade, full imports were 1411 TEU, down from January’s 2364 TEU and a drop of 7.1% year on year. Full exports amounted to 1140 TEU departing the port during the month, down 232 TEU from the previous month (1372TEU). Exports were also down from the corresponding period in 2024 by 9.8%. During February, the port exported a total of 1060 empty containers.

Total tonnage through the port during the month of February was 399,374 tonnes. Of this, 61.8% were imports (246,885 tonnes). Exports totalled 152,489 tonnes for the month. The top three import commodities by tonnage were petroleum products (81,630), mineral ores and concentrate (66,915) and sulphur (27,265). Agricultural products (63,737), general cargo (29,644) and refined minerals and metals (25,731) were the top three export commodities by tonnage for the month of February.

During February, Australia (45,688 tonnes), South Korea (44,860) and Peru (35,317) were the largest providers of import commodities. The top three export destinations were Australia (71,560), South Korea (35,243) and China (22,084).
