MAIN Roads WA has issued a tender for roadworks associated with the new Westport port at Kwinana.

The tender is for upgrades to Kwinana Freeway and Anketell Road taking the next step in what a media release issued this week described as ‘critical infrastructure’.

It said the work would support communities and pave the way for Westport.

The tender calls for work that would include complete project definition for upgrading Kwinana Freeway from Roe Highway to Thomas Road, to alleviate existing congestion for commuters and industry, and improve connectivity to other freight and logistic facilities north-east of Perth.

It also seeks complete project definition for upgrading Anketell Road between Kwinana Freeway and Leath Road, helping to improve access to the Kwinana Industrial Area, facilitate the construction of the port, and support eventual operations.

It would also progress long-term planning for Anketell Road between Kwinana Freeway and Tonkin Highway in Oakford, including the amendment of the Perth Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS) to protect Westport’s future freight route.

The Anketell-Thomas Road Freight Corridor (ATRFC) is the long-term plan for a future freight corridor connecting the new port in Kwinana with Tonkin Highway in Oakford.

An early concept design for the freight corridor was released for consultation in March 2022 to enable early discussions with the community about the impact of the future corridor and to inform directly impacted property owners of the area proposed to be protected by a Planning Control Area.

An early concept design released in March 2022 outlined the planning concept design for the freight corridor.

The plan includes upgrading Anketell Road to four lanes between the Kwinana Freeway and Leath Road in Kwinana, interchanges at Armstrong Road and Rockingham Road, intersection upgrades and changes at Mandogalup Road, McLaughlan Road (left in and left out), Abercrombie Road and Leath Road.

Upgrades to the existing freight route on Kwinana Freeway and Roe Highway will be required in the future to support operations of the new port and allow connectivity to other freight and logistic facilities north-east of Perth.

Planning for the ultimate corridor between Leath Road and Tonkin Highway will progress in line with future growth requirements of the new port, as well as future residential and commercial development needs.
