CONTAINER throughput increased at Port of Melbourne last month, with upticks reported across all container trades.

The port handled a total of 295,000 TEU in October 2024 – a 4.9% increase against October last year.

Full container import volumes (excluding Bass Strait) increased 5.8%, with furniture, domestic appliances and paperboard all above last year’s volumes.

Full container export volumes increased 3.1%, with cotton timber, hay, chaff and fodder and wheat also above last year’s volumes.

Full Bass Strait volumes were up 5.8% in October 2024, while empty container trade increased 0.2%.

Total non-container trades also increased, the port posting a 2.7% rise last month compared with October 2023.

This increase was driven by motor vehicle trade, up 7.7%, and dry bulk trade, up 16.2%.

The liquid bulk trade and break bulk trade decreased, however, dropping 4.3% ad 33.1%, respectively.
