Achieving a cleaner and greener shipping sector is behind the name of the new LNG dual-fuel box ship from Pacific International Lines, Kota Oasis.

The 8200TEU ship was officially unveiled during a ceremony last week at the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding yard in China, with Cindy Chang, wife of PIL deputy chair Peter Chang, conducting the official naming.

Kota Oasis is the first in a series of four 8200 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessel (designated as ‘O’ class) ordered by PIL from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.

These newbuild vessels are part of PIL’s stated long-term plans to improve its network deployment and renew its fleet for better operational efficiency and sustainability.

PIL chief executive Lars Kastrup said they were “delighted to welcome Kota Oasis to our fleet”.

“This vessel represents another significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability and operational excellence,” Mr Kastrup said.

“As the first Asian container shipping line to invest in LNG dual-fuel ships in 2022, we made a bold commitment towards reducing our environmental footprint and achieving our net zero emissions target by 2050.”

Mr Kastrup said the ‘O’ class vessels would join the 14,000 TEU ‘E’ class vessels in helping the company enhance its global connectivity and meet customer needs.

The name Kota Oasis is said to symbolise a haven of sustainability and innovation in the maritime industry, capturing the need for greener and cleaner shipping.

The ‘O’ class vessels can also use greener bio-methane fuels and are equipped with Win-GD’s XDF engines with iCER (intelligent control by exhaust recycling) which aims to reduce methane emissions.

The ‘O’ class vessels are also equipped with ammonia intermediate-ready fuel tanks.

According to PIL, the Kota Oasis will be the company’s fifth LNG-powered vessel to be delivered, joining PIL’s four 14,000 TEU LNG vessels delivered since last year.

PIL says it has another 13 LNG dual-fuel vessels on order to be delivered during the next few years.

Pacific International Lines was established in Singapore in 1967 and serves customers across Asia, China, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Oceania and the Pacific Islands.
