SAY ‘FAVA beans’ and the movie Silence of the Lambs immediately springs to mind with Sir Anthony Hopkins quote as Hannibal Lecter, “I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti”.

There’s no Chianti at the Port of Esperance, but they do have fava beans, more commonly known to many of us as broad beans or faba beans.

Shipping the beans can be a bit tricky with the conventional conveyor used in previous shipments from Esperance, but Qube has made a significant advancement in the process using a Qube Rotabox.

The Rotabox treats the beans more gently.

The cutting-edge, containerised bulk handling system was used for the first time to successfully load 4,200 tonnes of fava bean cargo at the Port of Esperance for Chicago-based agricultural supply chain manager ADM.

Posting on LinkedIn Qube says historically the Rotabox has excelled in sustainably exporting mineral concentrates.

“The successful handling of fava beans from Western Australia, in collaboration with Esperance Quality Grains (EQG), represents a pivotal milestone in diversifying the supply chain for local growers,” the post says.

“Utilising Qube Rotabox for bulk agricultural exports not only enhances our capabilities but also unlocks exciting new opportunities for growers.”
