A MAN has been charged over his alleged role in the attempted importation of 60 kilograms of methamphetamine into NSW in a sea-freight consignment.
US authorities last month found 95 kilograms of meth in a shipment headed from Los Angeles to Sydney. The authorities removed the drugs before the vessel departed for Australia.
Australian Federal Police found that the drugs, once in Australia, were to be left in a vehicle in a public carpark in Maroubra for collection.
This week, on 22 October, AFP left packages of a harmless substance (weighing in at 60 kilograms) in a vehicle. Police allegedly watched a man inspect the vehicle, retrieve a key from under the bumper and start the car.
Police arrested the Liverpool man (36) and he was charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs.
Police also searched the vehicle the man had arrived in, seizing three prepaid SIM card packs, about $100,000 in cash, a phone and an iPad.
The man was scheduled to appear before Downing Centre Local Court today (23 October).
He faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if convicted.
Investigations are ongoing.
