PORT of Melbourne’s total container throughput in June this year was up 2.3% against the same month last year, according to the latest monthly trade statistics from the port.

The port handled 264,000 TEU last month, with full imports and full exports (excluding Bass Strait) up 7.8% and 15.2% against the prior year, respectively.

Imports of furniture, domestic appliances and timber in June were all above last year’s volumes, while exports of timber, hay, chaff and fodder, barley and meats also increased.

Total empty container movements were down 3.3% in June 2024 against the same month last year.

Full Bass Strait volumes decreased 5.3% in June 2024, and full transhipments decreased 32.1%.

Port of Melbourne’s non-container trade increased 4.6% last month compared with June 2024, largely driven by the liquid bulk trade which shot up 25.9%.

The dry bulk trade in June increased 8.2% compared with the same month last year, however the breakbulk trade fell 39.4%.

Motor vehicle units also decreased, down 5.2% last month, while other non-container trades were down 0.3% for the month.
