PORT of Melbourne’s total monthly container throughput decreased to 252,000 TEU last month, down 6% on August 2023.
Full container import volumes (excluding Bass Strait) were down 3.8% in August 2024 against the same month last year, with but full container exports increased 7.6% for the same period.
Exports of hay, chaff & fodder, barley and wheat were all above last year’s volumes.
Full Bass Strait volumes decreased 8.5%, full transhipments were down 4.8%, and empty container trade plunged 17.7%
Port of Melbourne’s non-container trade also slid last month, dropping 17% compared with August 2023.
The largest monthly decrease in the non-container trade was breakbulk, which dropped 29%. Liquid bulk trade was down 18.9%, and dry bulk down 18.6%.
Motor vehicle trade (units) decreased 16.2%, while other non-container trade softened by 7.7% compared with August 2023.
