A GALA luncheon in Melbourne this month will celebrate the progress of the restoration of Australian-built tall ship Alma Doepel.
On 22 November, over lunch at Hotel Windsor, the board of sail-training charity Waypoint Foundation will discuss the restoration project and the role of tall ships in supporting the mental health of youth.
Alma Doepel is one of Australia’s oldest surviving tall ships, built in NSW in 1903. An important part of the ship’s history was its role in sail training in Port Phillip Bay throughout the 1980s and 90s.
Waypoint Foundation, which facilitates Alma Doepel’s sail training programs, has previously said the ship “launched many maritime industry careers including ships’ masters, pilots and harbour masters”.
A project to restore Alma Doepel is underway in Melbourne’s Docklands. The intent is that, once complete, the ship will once again support youth development programs.
A highlight of the gala luncheon will be a presentation from Professor Patrick McGorry, executive director of Australian youth mental health charity Orygen and a psychiatrist renowned for developing youth mental health services.
Waypoint Foundation’s gala luncheon will begin at 1200 on 22 November 2024 at Hotel Windsor on Spring Street, Melbourne. The event will wrap up at 1430. Registrations close at 1700 on 21 November.
