PORT of Melbourne has reported a 10% increase in total container throughput for December 2024, compared with the same month in 2023.

The port handled a total of 287,000 TEU in December, according to its latest monthly trade update.

Full imports (excluding Bass Strait) increased 9.9% against December 2023, and full exports increased 3.6%,

Imports of furniture, domestic appliances and paperboard were all above the previous year’s volumes, and exports of wheat, wine and nuts also increased against 2023 volumes.

Full Bass Strait trade increased 0.5%, full transhipments shot up 26.3% and the empty container trade increased 14%.

Total non-container trade in December 2024, measured in revenue tonnes, decreased 3.9% compared with the same month in 2023.

Dry bulk and liquid bulk trades both increased, up 15.9% and 10.1%, respectively.

But the breakbulk trade plunged 50.6%.

Motor vehicle trade (measured in units) dropped 10.5% and other non-container trade dipped 8.4%
