WORK is progressing at Port Hedland’s Lumsden Point reaching several important milestones.
In a LinkedIn post Pilbara Ports said the internal causeway is almost complete, with final road sealing in May.
Earthworks on the wharf laydown area have been completed and roads and intersection upgrades are progressing with overpass walls taking shape. The post said that once complete, Lumsden Point will position Port Hedland as a leader in green industries, unlock trade opportunities, and create hundreds of new jobs.
The new multi-user facility and logistics hub will facilitate the export of battery metals such as lithium and copper concentrates, the import of renewable energy infrastructure including wind turbines and blades, as well as support the growth of direct shipping services to the Pilbara
The Commonwealth Government is investing $565 million to support common user port upgrades in the Pilbara, part of which will enable the development of Lumsden Point. This is in partnership with the state government, which has committed $96.6 million to the project.
Growing the capacity of Pilbara Ports has been identified by Infrastructure Australia as a national infrastructure priority and the Lumsden Point project is a strategically significant, critical enabler of key federal and state government programs.
Lumsden Point will include dredging of channel access and turning basins, construction of two new multi-user berths, and a central access road and service corridor connecting to Great Northern Highway, enabling private sector investment in a landside logistics hub.
