THE INTERNATIONAL Cargo Handling Co-ordination Association (ICHCA) held its Logistics Long Lunch last Friday (15 November) at the Queensland Maritime Museum in South Brisbane.

The event made its return in 2024 and saw a number of guest speakers from the industry address those who attended.

The formalities opened with Peter van Duyn, company secretary of the ICHCA, who gave an overview of ICHCA Australia and its work, including in promotion of safety in cargo handling workplaces, and providing technical expertise.

Mr van Duyn also spoke about the association’s members, which include stevedores, port authorities, logistics providers, and maritime lawyers, amongst others.

Following Mr van Duyn was Captain Kaspar Kuiper, Chair of the QLD Maritime Museum, who gave short overview of what the museum does and stressed the importance of maintaining and securing Australia’s maritime heritage.

Captain Kuiper then introduced one of the volunteer shipwrights working on the restoration of the pearl lugger Penguin, built in 1907 on Thursday island, one of the last examples of a working Torres Strait Pearling vessel.

He explained some of the vessels’ history and gave an update on the restoration project.

That concluded the formal presentations of the day, after which the attendees spent some time networking on the scenic bank of the Brisbane River outside the museum.
