SUBMARINE rescue ship MV Besant will be open to the public this weekend as part of Fremantle Port’s Maritime Day.
The Royal Australian Navy’s 83 metre, bright orange submarine intervention gear ship, provides search and rescue support to Australia’s submarine fleet and the ship will be open for the public to go aboard.
The Australian Navy plays a significant part in Maritime Day, providing careers information, music from the Navy Band, a Clearance Dive Team display, the Stirling Health Centre first-aid displays and demonstrations, the gunnery department, the Fleet Support Unit West engineering display and more.
The Navy will be among more than 90 displays at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal on Saturday 2 November from 10am to 4pm. Entry to the event is free.
There will be free tours of Fremantle’s inner harbour by boat, an opportunity to go aboard Fremantle’s most powerful tug, the Svitzer Redhead, a vintage fashion parade with St Pat’s Community Centre, a display of classic rigged wooden yachts, an opportunity to meet Australian Border Force dog unit and lots of activities for children.
