THE CSIRO and partners in the CAPSTAN sea training program have opened applications for university students and trainers to take to the high seas next year onboard RV Investigator.

CAPSTAN is a first-of-its-kind training initiative that is transforming how marine science education is delivered. It offers a national approach to applied teaching and learning excellence in marine science and wider STEM disciplines, CSIRO says.

“CAPSTAN offers hands-on learning and development opportunities for university students, trainers and chief scientists … Participants can take their passion for marine science on a deep dive and immerse themselves in the expertise, advanced systems and diverse equipment used by RV Investigator in modern marine research.

“The program also promotes collaboration and the development of cross-discipline knowledge and skills, including communication and media skills. CAPSTAN provides a platform for institutional, industrial, cultural and generational knowledge transfer and seeks to help develop Australia’s next generation of marine experts.”

Fully funded berths are available for university students and trainers, including a voyage Chief Scientist, on the next CAPSTAN voyage in March 2025. This will be a 10-day multi-disciplinary voyage out of Hobart from 8-17 March 2025. Pre-voyage workshops will take place in-person in Hobart the week commencing 3 March 2025.

Student applications are invited from honours, masters and PhD students, who will be given priority in the assessment process. Undergraduate students in their final year of study can also apply and will be considered, where berths are available. Students must be enrolled in a relevant degree at an Australian university at the time of the voyage.

Trainer applications, including applications to be voyage Chief Scientist, are invited from researchers affiliated with an Australian University, research organisation or industry partner at the time of the voyage.

CAPSTAN is a maritime education and training initiative of CSIRO, the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) and the Australian and New Zealand International Scientific Drilling Consortium (ANZIC). The program is supported by grants of sea time on RV Investigator from the CSIRO Marine National Facility and through funding from the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).
