PORT of Melbourne’s total container throughput increased again last month.
The latest monthly trade report indicates container trade was up 2.1% to 282,000 TEU in July this year compared with the same month last year.
Full exports (excluding Bass Strait) shot up 14.1% with furniture, domestic appliances and clothing all above volumes handled in July 2023.
Full imports (excluding Bass Strait) increased 2.8% compared with the July last year, with timber, hay, chaff and fodder, cotton and meats all above last year’s volumes.
Full Bass Strait volumes were also up, with a 7.8% increase last month against July 2023.
Total empty container movements were down 1.6%, while full transhipments plunged 29.8%.
Port of Melbourne’s non-container trade decreased 4.6% last month, with the break-bulk trade posting the steepest drop at 43.4%.
The liquid-bulk trade also declined last month, down 25.1% against figures posted in July 2023.
But the dry-bulk trade increased 17.5% compared with the same month last year.
Motor vehicle units also increased in July, up 4.8% against units handled in the same month last year.
Other non-container trades were down a solid 15% in July 2024 compared with July 2023.
