WEST AUSTRALIAN logistics company EES Shipping has put together a slightly different Christmas wish list for Santa.
Managing Director Brian Hack has put pen to paper to cast a different perspective on what’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year.
“Unless you work in freight forwarding,” Mr Hack says. “In which case the Christmas season can be one filled with stress, deadlines and tighter-than-usual schedules.”
Mr Hack says EES is always keen to find solutions to industry concerns and problems, and so in the spirit of goodwill and good humour, has put together a bit of a Christmas wish list to pass on to the man in the Big Red Suit.
“It’s not quite the 12 days of Christmas, but here are a few issues we’d look at sprinkling a little bit of Christmas magic on if we could, to help make the freight and logistics sector a little easier heading into 2025.
“Extended Free Time: Detention remains an ongoing issue, with shipping lines traditionally only allowing seven to 10 days for containers to be returned before charging fees, regardless of delays caused by outside factors including customs and quarantine inspections. We’ve recently seen some shipping lines offer extended free time for containers, and we’d love to see more of this in 2025, please.
“Fees and Charges: We accept that the cost of doing business is increasing right across the economy, but a little reprieve from the significant increases to various fees, charges and insurances would be welcomed by the sector and consumers alike.
“Fewer Pests: Never mind the partridge in the pear tree, we don’t want to see any pests arriving on our shores, and in particular those exotic imports that have the potential to devastate our agricultural sector.
“Unbunch the Vessels: When several ships arrive at a port in a short period of time, it’s referred to as vessel bunching and can cause delays in unloading and landside transportation. The absence of vessel bunching usually means schedules are flowing smoothly, which is what we aim for in an ideal scenario.
“Advancements in Industry-Specific Technology: The ongoing digitisation of freight and logistics has seen the development of industry-specific software and AI programs to streamline processes and create efficiencies, particularly around data-entry, cross-checking and documentation. We’re keen to see ongoing advancement in this area, and for broader adoption of the technology, where appropriate.
“Geopolitical Crystal Ball: Without making light of the various conflicts continuing around the world, we’d like to see an easing of geopolitical tensions, not just for the benefit of our sector but for the global population.
“And finally Santa, if it’s not too much to ask, do you think you could help us out on the footy front and ensure West Coast make the finals next season?”
