A NEW coal carrier in NYK Line’s fleet will offset carbon emissions on its contracted voyage with an electricity company.
The new ship, Kagura, is to operate under a long-term transport contract with Japanese company Chugoku Electric Power (EnerGia).
NYK said it intends to use carbon offsets to reduce the ship’s emissions to zero for its entire contracted voyage. The goal is to achieve carbon neutrality.
Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding delivered the new ship, Kagura, on 9 March. NYK Line welcomed it with a naming ceremony.
“The ship’s name, Kagura, is derived from Iwami Kagura, a masked traditional performance art loved by the people of Japan’s Chugoku region,” NYK said.
“The vessel was named by EnerGia with the hope that the ship will be loved by people for a long time.”
Liberia-flagged Kagura is 235 metres LOA and weighs 105,800 dwt.
