MISSION to Seafarers Victoria is preparing for this year’s Maritime Art Prize and Exhibition.
The annual competition invites artists to submit pieces responding to the theme “the relationship of humanity to the sea”.
MtS Victoria will be accepting entries from 24 July until 8 September, ahead of an exhibition at the Docklands mission building in October.
“The Maritime Art Prize and Exhibition has garnered a reputation for attracting some of Australia’s most talented and innovative professional and emerging artists,” MtS Victoria said.
“With a remarkable prize pool of $25,000, this year’s edition promises to be a celebration of artistic excellence and maritime heritage.”
MtS Victoria will distribute the prize money across four categories: the Maritime Art Prize award ($15,000), the Best in Traditional Maritime Art award ($5000), the Runner-Up award ($2000), the Emerging Artist award ($1000) and the Viewer’s Choice award.
This year’s judging panel includes Geelong Gallery director and CEO Jason Smith, arts industry leader Jane Scott and Heide Museum of Modern Art artistic director Lesley Harding.
“Their expertise and discerning eye will ensure that the selected artworks represent the highest levels of artistic achievement,” MtS Victoria said.
The finalists’ works will be on display at the heritage-listed mission building from 20 October until 26 October 2023.
“This free exhibition will provide art enthusiasts and the general public with a unique opportunity to witness the fusion of artistry and maritime heritage.”
MtS Victoria said the exhibited artworks would be available for purchase.
