THE INTERNATIONAL Maritime Organization has announced the candidates for the position of IMO secretary-general.
Current IMO secretary-general Kitack Lim is to step down from the role once his term expires on 31 December 2023.
Seven IMO member states have nominated candidates for the position.
They include Moin Uddin Ahmed from Bangladesh, Suat Hayri Aka from Türkiye; Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco from Panama, Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry from Dominica, Nancy Karigithu from Kenya, Minna Kivimäki from Finland and Zhang Xiaojie from China.
The IMO council at its 128th session in December last year approved the procedures for holding the election of the secretary-general at the July 2023 session of the council.
The election is scheduled to take place at IMO headquarters on 18 July.
Following the election in July 2023, the council will submit its decision to the 33rd session of the assembly of IMO in late 2023. The assembly will be invited to approve the appointment.
The elected secretary-general will then take office on January 1 2024.
