MITSUI O.S.K. Lines has partnered with a maritime electrification company Pyxis to promote the use of electric vessels.
A memorandum of understanding between the companies outlines their plans to develop and market electric vessels business in the Singapore region.
They also intend to broaden the introduction of electric vessels in Japan to help reduce emissions.
MOL would contribute its maritime knowledge and market networks to the partnership and Pyxis would use its position as a start-up company to drive mass adoption and commercialisation of electric vessels.
MOL senior managing executive officer Nobuo Shiotsu said he was pleased conclude the MoU with Pyxis.
“We believe this memorandum will be an important step for both companies to make a significant change in the shipping industry,” he said.
“Promoting the introduction of electric vessels to solve environmental issues will be one way. We believe co-operation with partners who has same ambition and trustworthy is essential to achieve that.”
Pyxis founder Tommy Phun said the company was honoured to partner with MOL.
“With the sustainability movement disrupting maritime businesses, efforts to decarbonise have become necessary to stay competitive.
“Our mission is to ease and boost mass adoption of electric vessels in the region.
“Together with MOL, we are confident in expanding our outreach into Japan which is one of our key markets.”
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore is also looking to electrification in its waters; MPA recently called on financiers and insurers to support the adoption of electric harbour craft in Singapore.
