TASPORTS has entered the second phase of berth strengthening works at Port of Burnie.

Strengthening works commenced at Berth 4 in February this year to allow the upgrade of two main stern fenders.

Berth 4 is used by the Strait Link vessels, which sail between Melbourne and Burnie.

“The first phase strengthening work was undertaken during business hours, while the current phase to install the new Super Cone Fender systems needs to be completed at night to allow daily visits by Strait Link vessels,” TasPorts said in an update.

It said Tasmanian firm Batchelor Construction Group is undertaking the works.

“The Batchelor team has to ‘work over the side’ of the berth on suspended scaffolding, hence the dependence on tide and weather to complete the work.”

Berth 4 is the original breakwater for the Burnie port. TasPorts said the berth is 133 years old, making it the oldest commercial wharf at its ports.

Current strengthening works are scheduled for completion by the end of May, tide and weather dependent.
