PORT of Newcastle handled 13.4 million tonnes of trade in November 2023, which was a 32.5% increase on the same month last year.
Total exports were up 34% to almost 13 million tonnes last month while total imports dropped 7% to 441,498 tonnes.
Coal exports accounted for 12.9 million tonnes of the port’s total trade, a 36% increase on the 9.4 million tonnes of coal exported in November 2022.
November’s monthly coal trade figure was the fourth highest for the year to date. It was also the port’s best-performing November since 2019.
This is despite a major protest and blockade at the Port of Newcastle last month, which attempted to disrupt coal exports.
The port recorded 178 ship visits in November, of which 142 were coal ships.
