JODI McKay’s support for a container terminal in the Hunter has earned her the support of the Maritime Union Newcastle Branch.
Ms McKay is contesting Chris Minns for the leadership of New South Wales Labor, former leader Michael Daley having stepped aside after leading the party to defeat in the state election.
MUA Newcastle branch secretary Glen Williams said Ms McKay stood with maritime workers during her time in office in Newcastle.
“She has continued to stand with us in her shadow ministerial position as shadow minister for transport and shadow minister for roads, maritime and freight,” Mr Williams said.
“Jodi has always supported a container terminal in Newcastle, which is the single most important development opportunity in Newcastle and the Hunter region with the potential to shape the future of the economy and drive employment.
“Jodi has declared her longstanding commitment to values and justice for working people, ensuring that Labor will continue to fight to criminalise wage theft, introduce industrial manslaughter laws, and crack down on dodgy labour hire. These are all commitments the MUA supports.”
Mr Williams said Ms McKay was a person of integrity.
“She has a proven track record of standing up for working families and MUA members believe she will be a great advocate for those who have no voice in the parliament,” he said.
“The MUA Newcastle Branch unanimously support Jodi McKay for NSW Labor Leader.”
