TRADE was up at Port Kembla on the back of a significant increase in imports, according to the latest trade statistics from NSW Ports.

In July, non-containerised trade through the port was 2.047m revenue tonnes, up 7% on June’s figures, but down 6% on July 2019. Of this figure, 58% consisted of exports and 42% imports.

Total exports for the month (783,608 revenue tonnes) were down 29% on June and 7% less than July 2019’s exports.

Making up 91% of all exports was dry bulk with 716,823 revenue tonnes.

This fell short of both June 2020 and the same period last year by 28% and 5% respectively.

Break bulk exports (37,029 revenue tonnes) were also down on last month (58%) and June 2019 (11%). RoRo exports, however, were up 18% on from June but suffered a drop of 41% on last year with 29,756 revenue tonnes (1757 units).

Total imports for July were up 55% from June but down 6% on July 2019. Dry bulk accounted for 69% of all imports (870,262 revenue tonnes), followed by RoRo (291,436 revenue tonnes or 18,635 units) at 23%. Bulk liquid and break bulk made up the remainder (51,272 and 50,588 revenue tonnes respectively).
