Mid-West Ports Authority are expecting an impressive cruise schedule during the holidays, with preparations underway to welcome Geraldton’s first overnight cruise ship.

In a joint initiative by MWPA and the City of Greater Geraldton, the Azamara Quest made its inaugural call to Geraldton Port on 17 December.

MWPA chief executive Dr Rochelle Macdonald said she was thrilled to have the Azamara Quest as a visitor.

“Our team have been working incredibly hard to have the berth ready and looking fantastic for our first overnight cruise ship in just a few weeks’ time,” she said.

“MWPA strives to be a sustainable gateway for trade and tourism in the region and this cruise ship is a perfect example of the type of opportunity we want to continue facilitating for the Mid West.

“It’s a chance to not only welcome a cruise ship that has never been to Geraldton before, but to give passengers and crew more time to experience what the Mid West has to offer.”

After sailing from Indonesia, the Azamara Quest spent several days at sea before arriving in the Mid-West.

Passengers enjoyed tours of the region and also visited the township.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn encouraged local retailers and restaurants to open their doors for the overnight stay.

“We’re looking forward to giving the Azamara Quest a very warm welcome and we hope our local businesses will too,” he said.

Geraldton Port is to welcome three more cruise ships throughout December and January.
