MITSUI O.S.K. Lines has yesterday (30 January) announced the delivery of Prima Verde, a multi-purpose vessel with a range of environmentally friendly features.
The Japanese shipping line has revealed Prima Verde is the world’s first vessel of any type to use green steel materials, an engine that can run exclusively on marine gas oil (MGO), and a wind assisted vessel propulsion system.
The 129-metre length overall, 17611 dwt ship is operated by group company MOL Drybulk and effectively owned by Japanese line Daishin Shipping Co., and was delivered at the Onomichi Dockyard.
MOL explained Prima Verde uses a green steel material, supplied by JFE Steel Corporation, that significantly reduces CO2 emissions, in which CO2 emission reductions in the steel manufacturing process are allocated to optional steel materials, and used for the vessel’s hull.
The Liberian-flagged vessel is also equipped with an engine from the Japan Engine Corporation that can run exclusively on MGO. MOL said the engine boasts high combustion efficiency and low carbon dioxide emissions during operations.
The vessel boats further environmentally friendlyfeatures, equipped with two VentoFoil wind-power assisted vessel propulsion devices from ECONOWIND B.V.
The propulsion system is expected to reduce fuel consumption and GHG emissions by utilising wind power during the vessel’s journeys.
Multi-purpose vessels refer to vessels that transport steel products, construction machinery, heavy machinery, plants, railroad vehicles, and bulk cargoes, amongst others.
