A BINGLE involving an empty ore train and rail wagons at Andoom, near Weipa, on Cape York Peninsula is under investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

The incident occurred about 9.30am on Sunday 22 September on the Rio Tinto rail system.

According to the ATSB, an empty ore train hit rail wagons that were being loaded with bauxite at the Andoom mine, about 20km north of Weipa.

The train’s driver sustained minor injuries and required treatment in Weipa hospital.

The train’s locomotive and four ore wagons were reported to be “extensively damaged”.

“As part of the investigation, the ATSB will review locomotive data logger information and interview the train driver and other rail operations personnel,” a bureau statement read.

“A final report will be released at the end of the investigation.”

The ATSB is expected to notify affected parties and seek action should “a critical safety issue” be identified.
