THE AUSTRALIAN Rail Track Corporation has announced a “major maintenance shutdown” on the New South Wales North Coast network this month, stopping freight services.
The ARTC said is carrying out maintenance works at various locations on the main lines between Telarah in NSW and Acacia Ridge in Queensland.
The shutdown is scheduled to begin at 0530 on Saturday 18 March and lift at around 0100 on Monday 20 March.
Simon Ormsby, ARTC group executive for the Interstate Network, said the shutdown is necessary for maintaining a safe and reliable network.
He said maintenance works will include rerailing and re-sleepering, track resurfacing, reconditioning and ballasting, vegetation removal, level crossing upgrades, bridge repairs, drainage works, embankment repairs, ultrasonic testing and geotechnical investigations.
“These important works and general upkeep are vital so that the network continues to operate efficiently,” Mr Ormsby said.
He said there may also be night works in some locations.
“While freight services and passenger services will be stopped, we still ask motorists to remain vigilant and slow down at level crossings during the shutdown as there will be machinery and other movements on the rail line.
“We apologise for any disruption or inconvenience and thank the community for its support and patience while these essential works are taking place.
“We want to reassure the community these works will be completed as safely and efficiently as possible.”
