THE AUSTRALIAN Transport Safety Bureau is opening an investigation into a recent incident in which a wagon frame failed while the train was operating between Broken Hill and Newcastle.
On 6 January, the network controller alerted the crew of freight train 3YN2 of a possible issue with the train, according to the ATSB.
The train was between Euabalong West and Kiacatoo when the crew inspected the train and found that the wagon frame on the train’s 32nd wagon had failed. It was resting on the rail.
The wagon was loaded with two containers that were carrying lead. The two containers remained secured to the wagon and there were no reported injuries.
The investigation into the incident is being led by the NSW Office of Transport Safety Investigations, which generally conducts rail investigations on behalf of the ATSB.
A final report is expected upon completion of the investigation.
