WALLENIUS Wilhelmsen has signed a biofuel contract with ExxonMobil with a goal to reduce emissions in the shipping industry.
The contract entails the delivery of sustainable biofuel in the second half of this year. The first biofuel delivery is scheduled for July.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen said the contract with ExxonMobil supports a strategic goal to have a net-zero emissions integrated supply-chain service by 2027.
Jon Tarjei Kråkenes, head of the Orcelle Accelerator at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, said the biofuel from ExxonMobil contains 30% biofuel and 70% conventional fuels.
“It is the best option we have available for decarbonisation of the fleet today,” he said.
“This agreement underscores our dedication to reducing emissions and promoting environmentally friendly practices within the shipping industry.
“While the contracted volume represents a relatively small portion compared to our annual fuel consumption, it serves as a crucial step in our broader sustainability efforts and sets the stage for further progress.”
Aly Abdelmotaal, regional marine marketing manager at ExxonMobil, said the oil and gas company was proud to be working with Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen said partnerships such as its contract with ExxonMobil are helping the shipping industry reshape its practices to reduce its carbon footprint.
