SHIPPING Australia has announced the appointment of Captain Sunil Dhowan as a director.
Captain Dhowan, who is head of port and cargo operations – Oceania for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ocean, began his sea-going career in 1978 and has experience of crewing general cargo, bulk, container and ro-ro vessels.
He has visited almost all ports in Australia during his sailing days before coming ashore in 1992.
In his current role, he has been heavily involved with biosecurity and has also served as the chair of SAL’s Victorian state committee for three years.
Shipping Australia chairman Scott Henderson said Captain Dhowan was well-placed to make a contribution.
“All the directors of Shipping Australia will join me in welcoming Sunil to the board. He is very knowledgeable about shipping and he was very proactive as a SAL state chair in Victoria,” Mr Henderson said.
“Having known Sunil for many years, I am confident that he will be a great addition to the team.”
Captain Dhowan said it was “a privilege to be appointed to the board of Shipping Australia”.
“SAL is a well-respected peak shipping organization that I have been actively involved with throughout my 25 year career at Wallenius Wilhelmsen,” he said.
“In my role I would like to continue SAL’s strong support of shipping lines, owners, and the government. I would also like to help support viable shipping-related reforms for the ongoing promotion of coastal and international trade for the Australian maritime industry, with an added focus on safety, the environment, sustainability, compliance and welfare of seafarers, as I see these as key values and pillars for our industry.”
