AMSA says investigations are continuing into the vessel Unison Jasper, a bulker detained at Newcastle last week.
As reported in Daily Cargo News, the Hong Kong-flagged ship was detained following reports of “serious deficiencies”.
The ship is used for transporting moving alumina between Gladstone and Newcastle.
“The Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier Unison Jasper remains under detention in Newcastle for breaches of the Maritime Labour Convention,” a spokesperson for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority told Daily Cargo News.
“The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is continuing investigations into the seriousness and repeated nature of these breaches.”
On Friday 31 July 2020, eleven crew members were landed ashore and transferred to Sydney for quarantine while awaiting repatriation to their home country.
The ship has shifted to a layup berth as replacement crew are organised by the ship’s operator.
“The ship will not be permitted to leave Newcastle until the minimum safe manning standards can be met to the satisfaction of AMSA and the ship’s flag state,” AMSA stated.
