A CREW member on a bulk carrier berthed at Albany jumped overboard and swam ashore on 7 January.
Police arrested the 37-year-old Vietnamese national on 9 January at an Albany backpackers accommodation site.
He was charged and refused bail after failing to comply with the emergency management quarantine directions upon arriving in Western Australia.
The man was tested for COVID-19 and returned a negative result.
WA Premier Mark McGowan told reporters that this was “an unusual case”. “This is the only time I’m aware of someone jumping off a ship into the water and swimming ashore. Clearly, that was not something anyone would have predicted,” he said.
