A FINE of $125,000 has been imposed on the Maritime Union for contempt of court.

The union pleaded guilty to breaching an injunction sought by Victoria International Container Terminal not to go within a certain distance of the terminal gates.

A spokesperson for Victoria International Container Terminal said they were happy with the result and described the fine handed down by the court as “a win for the community”.

Union members and their supporters originally staged a picket outside the gates of VICT after he was denied more shifts owing to his being denied a security clearance.

The Maritime Union of Australia now forms part of the larger Construction, Forestry, Mining and Maritime Union (CFMMEU).
