MORE than 50 enthusiastic law students gathered for a careers night in Melbourne aimed at attracting the next generation of maritime lawyers.

The event, hosted by Ashurst, was organised by the Victorian branch of the Maritime Law Association and the Australian Law Students Association.

Among those attending were students from all Australian states and as well as overseas nations.

Proceedings began with a letter of welcome from Justice Angus Stewart, recently appointed to the Federal Court in Admiralty.

There were speakers from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, ANL, Colin Biggers Paisley, HFW, the Victorian bar and Victoria University shared some “best and worst” moments in maritime law.

The theme most clearly inspiring to this talented young audience was that of Australia’s significant and growing global role in the development of maritime law.

A lively evening discussion ensued about solving legal issues across borders and in different business cultures.
