NORTH Korean bulker Wise Honest has arrived in the port of Pago Pago, American Samoa, having been detained by US authorities.

The vessel was initially detained in Indonesia in the first-half of last year and more recently was handed over to US authorities.

The ship had been sailing to Indonesia and US authorities believe it was involved in so-called “sanctions busting”.

MarineTraffic shows Wise Honest (IMO 8905490) as being flagged in North Korea.

Launched in 1989, it has a dead weight tonnage of 27,881.

Tensions have increased on the Korean Peninsula with that country’s military firing a number of test missiles late last week.

Talks last year involving US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un raised hopes of a longer term peace treaty, but are still to result in meaningful change.

The Korean War (1950 – 1953) ended with an armistice, but without a formal treaty.
