MARITIME safety systems provider Kordia announced it would continue delivering the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System radio services in Australia for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Kordia has provided this service since 2002. Under the new agreement, Kordia’s Maritime Operations Centre in Canberra will provide the maritime radio service on behalf of AMSA for the next 10 years.

AMSA response centre manager Kevin McEnvoy said the service is vital for maintaining the safety of seafarers in Australian waters.

“The communications delivered via the GMDSS radio services are a critical part of our ability to respond quickly to people in distress across our region,” he said.

“The ability to maintain 24-hour nationwide monitoring of high frequency radio distress, urgency and safety communications is a major contributor to the effectiveness of our search and rescue services and critical to keeping people safe out on the water.”

Kordia head of maritime Christian Hillier said the company is thankful for the opportunity and is committed to providing high class service.

“Kordia is proud to have provided the GMDSS services for 20 years, and we look forward to continuing this important work with AMSA for the foreseeable future.”

The new agreement for GMDSS service between AMSA and Kordia commences from July 2022.

Kordia also provides critical maritime communications services out of its maritime operation centre in Wellington, NZ.

The company said it designed Kordia designed, built and operates the HF and VHF networks in the region that are responsible for coverage of nearly a quarter of the world’s oceans.

Kordia operates the network through its maritime operation centres. The are manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on behalf of Australia and New Zealand national maritime authorities AMSA and MNZ.
