UNION action between the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and Teekay Shipping (Australia) Pty Ltd (Teekay), has been lifted.
Bunkering at Fremantle Port has now returned to normal.
The MUA had accused Teekay of using cheap foreign labour on the Absolute bunker tanker operating at the port of Fremantle and was seeking a significant pay rise for bunker tanker crew.
The MUA filed for Protected Industrial Action and the union and Teekay attended a compulsory conference which enabled normal work to resume.
Teekay charters and operates the bunker tanker Absolute which has provided bunker delivery services in and around Fremantle harbour, since November 2024.
A statement from Teekay on 19 March said following the handover, immediately after Teekay took control of the vessel, Teekay put in place an Australian crew and continued negotiations toward a new enterprise bargaining agreement with the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) (which had commenced in October 2024).
“Teekay has now reached an in-principle agreement with the MUA, which will shortly be voted on by MUA members on the Absolute.
“As a result of the agreement all protected industrial action has ceased. Teekay is committed to providing a viable and efficient bunker service at Fremantle,” the statement said.
Teekay Shipping Australia provides a comprehensive suite of marine services, including shipping logistics and vessel management, for a broad range of customers in Australia. Teekay operates from offices in Sydney, Perth, Henderson and Cairns.
