SEA Swift and East Arnhem Regional Council are celebrating after winning an award for their recycling initiative at the 2019 NT Natural Resource Management Awards in Darwin.
The Northern Australia shipping company and EARC fought clinched the Best Collaboration in Natural Resource Management Award after helping cut landfill waste and increase recycling in the Northern Territory’s remote coastal and island communities.
Sea Swift has supported the Council since 2017 by moving recycling materials from the East Arnhem Land communities of Gove, Groote Eylandt, Bickerton, Umbakumba, Elcho Island, Lake Evella, Milingimbi, and Ramingining back to Darwin for processing at zero cost to Council.
The two organisations also have been working to prevent toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and recyclable waste streams from entering unlined landfill sites across the region’s nine remote Indigenous communities.
The initiative aims to cut the combined 215,641m² area of all landfills in East Arnhem communities.
