OCEAN Network Express has signed contracts for the construction of 12 new methanol dual-fuel containerships.
The contracts are with Jiangnan Shipyard and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, which are to build six 13,000 TEU vessels each.
The new ships are slated for delivery from 2027, becoming ONE’s inaugural fleet of methanol dual-fuel vessels.
ONE chief executive officer Jeremy Nixon said the carrier’s decision to invest in methanol dual-fuel vessels was part of a strategy to reach net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.
“[The] upcoming new fleet is pivotal in achieving our goal of deploying the first alternative fuel ships by 2030 and marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a greener and more sustainable maritime industry,” he said.
ONE’s future methanol fleet would include an optimised hull form, waste heat recovery systems and bow windshield.
Selected vessels would also be equipped with an air lubrication system and shaft generator to help explore potential enhancements in fuel efficiency and the reduction of GHG emissions.
ONE said the innovations could help accelerate its decarbonisation efforts and ensure compliance are in line with regulations in the shipping industry.
