MITSUI O.S.K Lines has joined an initiative tasked with reducing the global maritime industry’s methane emissions.
The Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII) is led by Safetytech Accelerator, a not-for-profit set up by Lloyd’s Register.
The MAMII coalition aims encourage ship owners and operators to adopt proven abatement technology at scale.
MOL said by participating in the initiative it aims to minimise the environmental impact of methane slip in shipping.
It said it also hopes to aid the decarbonisation of LNG-fuelled vessels.
At the launch of the MAMII program in September last year, Safetytech Accelerator head of partnerships Steve Price said shipping currently lacks the information and tools it needs to accurately measure the amount of methane released by LNG-fuelled ships, and the extent of theimpact.
“We believe that better information will allow the maritime industry to better understand the extent to which its LNG-fuelled ships are emitting methane,” Mr Price said.
“Understanding the extent of this methane slip will allow companies’, society and policymakers understand LNG’s real environmental impact.
“Empowering markets to channel investments to new technologies that can reduce methane slip, or to other transition fuels.”
