SHIPPPING and maritime businesses need to embrace environmental innovation, Maritime Industry Australia deputy chief executive Angela Gillham says.
MIAL has organised an Environment Masterclass in Melbourne next week.
“It’s a significant time of change for the global shipping industry as it faces the immediate challenge of low sulphur regulations and the ongoing need to power maritime trade while meeting the IMO GHG emissions reduction targets,” Ms Gillham said.
“Maritime businesses need to begin to embrace innovative approaches to technology investment and data and communications to better understand their emissions profile and leverage the opportunities that come with understanding the ‘well to wake’ impact of vessel operations.”
The MIAL Environment Masterclass is to examine existing technology to promote energy efficiency, prospects for low to zero carbon fuels, means to monitor, understand and communicate greenhouse gas emissions and the regulations and incentives driving change.
