GEELONGPORT is now powered by 100% renewable energy.
On 1 December the port switched to renewable energy under a partnership with Barwon Water and Baron Health through the Barwon Renewable Energy Partnership.
GeelongPort entered a 10-year renewable power purchase agreement through its partnership with Barwon.
GeelongPort said the agreement will see renewable electricity produced at the Mount Gellibrand windfarm (west of Geelong) sent to the grid and allocated to GeelongPort, offsetting the energy used at port facilities.
“This partnership enables us to purchase 100% renewable electricity with net zero emissions,” GeelongPort said.
“The annual electricity volume we have purchased through this plan will provide for 100% of GeelongPort’s operational needs.
“We have also purchased six gigawatt hours per year to provide renewable energy for the new Spirit of Tasmania facility.”
GeelongPort said the power purchase agreement is the first partnership of its kind in Victoria, involving both public and private sector entities.
“Our shift to 100% renewable energy, and our 2022 GRESB sector leader result, highlights that we are on the right track to achieve our aspiration to be Australia’s most sustainable port,” it said.
